...from the inside out

"We perceive the world from the outside in, but we tell the story from the inside out."

                                                Helen Seubert Fortner

I decided since I have your attention with the Dentolytical Analysis (SM) and I have a website, I'd throw out yet another dream... to one day have a column titled,... from the inside out.

I guess it was October 2006. I felt as though the walls were caving in around me, my marriage, my work, my life in general. What's the saying... if you don't like the results, don't do the same thing. So I decided to change my life.

After being a clinical dental hygienist for 23 years, how do you change your life? You begin to think outside the box, for starters. You become pro active in your strengths. Mine being dental hygiene over my marriage, I decided to explore my dental hygiene avenues. By February 2007, I had my own business, The "Pynk" Panther Temporary Dental Hygienist, LLC. It was a great time of the year to find temporary dental hygiene work, especially in Virginia Beach, VA.

I had lived in Virginia Beach for 19 years. It is a huge area, and what great dental teams. I never refer to a dental office as such because it takes a "team" to reach a vision... I'm a wrok horse, I like the team approach and I need a vision to keep me in line. I do wonder outside the box, often.

Well, I have a story to tell about the Dentolytical Analysis (SM)........ Boy, does it have a vision! My vision to eradicate oral disease as the #1 chronic childhood disease in the US. However, I'm saving that story for another time.

I have successfully registered for a training course in speaking in San Diego, CA in June, offered by Katherine Eitel. She is a mesmerizing speaker. I had the opportunity to meet her at the CareerFusion 2008 retreat in Daytona Beach, FL. She is the creator of the "Lioness Principle." She's known as the "Lioness" and what a "Performer!" As the creator of the Dentolytical Analysis (SM), I'm hoping to be able to tell my story as well as Katherine tells hers.

I was introduced to CareerFusion by a dear dental hygiene colleague, Cathy Seifert. I highly recommend the experience if you are looking for dental hygiene opportunities (beyond clinical), guidance and new purpose in your life. The retreat was so rewarding to each of the attendees. We all gained emotional growth in one way or another.

Personally for me, CareerFusion was a real challenge. I am not a PowerPoint literate individual by any means. As part of our preparation for the retreat, we were asked to create a PowerPoint presentation. Good heavens! I elicited help from my 17 year old daughter, who has very little patience with her mom when it comes to computers. She blew through the fundamentals of the program so quickly the computer was smoking! I took what I could get, and I have to say, my presentation was pretty impressive. We were asked to present a theme... networking your dreams into reality was mine.

During the retreat, we were asked to create a second PowerPoint presentation. I had just entered the world of Career - Confusion! All on my own, I welcomed my daughter, with no patience and the smoking computer! The second presentation was awful! Awful! I received a report from the retreat Coaches with a video recording. I still haven't viewed the recording and the Coaches were kind! But I have to say, I redeemed myself with the following letter; here's how...

.... from the inside out!

Greetings Hyperlink Queen Lynn, Faculty, Sponsors and fellow CareerFusion Colleagues:

Wishing Judy O'Brien and Pamela Runge, speedy, healthy recoveries. That said, I hope you all have recovered.

Lynn, I had so many obstacles during my CareerFusion 2008 experience, the business travel conversation was not retained. I was emotionally drained and PPT challenged. I even had a tough time with the rock selection. I couldn't get over the one's that spoke to me! Why did I have a connection with the one that had the cracks, scratches and split? And WHY did I choose to keep it? In restrospect, let me share some events leading up to the rock decision:

  • My bathroom...Many of you saw all the CRAPP I brought... docking station, extra keyboard, printer (Dinosaur). I unloaded it ----------- all into my room BEFORE I realized I only had a shower. No bath, Jacuzzi, hot soak. Yoga at sunrise couldn't do what a long soak --- bath salts or aromatherapy --- can do;
  • Table talk vs ORTHO;
  • Day two realizing you were sitting with the sponsors and not the attendees; and
  • Trying to set up my computer in a small unoccupied space between two strangers with 2007 PPT and I have 2003 ------ Dinosaur program and I'm challenged! Stephanie wouldn't even look at me when I came over. I had to tap her on the shoulder for her attention. Then we were told our homework assignment...yet another PPT. Stephanie told me the look on my face resembled a frozen deer in the field when the head lights hit its eyes!
The Journey Home

The drive on 95N was a tight muscle neck twister experience. The rain was pounding and my fists were clenched for hours around the steering wheel. I knew there was no way I was going to make THREE AND A HALF more hours of this, so I transformed myself into a woman on a mission for a Jacuzzi. I stayed in Georgia for two nights. (Christine, I'm cracking myself up!)

Digesting the Crickets

What an overload of material! A lifetime of information. I have never had an IPM test/score --- or have I? What did it all mean? Algorithm based patient assessments, MI technology, business plans, consulting tools, published books, authors, National Speakers Association speakers.

3 Days, 2 Extra Nights and 10 Jacuzzi Soaks Later...

I GOT IT! I GOT IT! First and foremost, I'd like to say, Katherine, you mesmerized me! The "Lioness Principle" is a brilliant concept and you are a wonderful performer. Here's what I got:

"We all have data, we all have emotions. These are the premises behind making a change. Transformation is inevitable. How will you perform? Leave the baggage, get your strengths from the source, YOU!"

Transformation

I find myself in the transformation phase of my change. I became the "Pynk" Panther Temporary Dental Hygienist, LLC in March 2007. Boy, you talk about the fear factor! Networking is my game. Since then my career has been in exponential numerical warp drive, or should I say, zip drive? I realize now it's okay to be afraid. I just need to focus on the vision --- to eradicate Oral Disease as the #1 chronic childhood disease in the US.

Ownership

Just as I own my past, I need to own my future. I also have a concept, the Dentolytical Analysis (SM). It will empower every hygienist, the practice of dental hygiene and in turn satisfy my dream, my vision. (Steve, you may need another division at PreViser. Please talk to Deb Grant about my contract, to include a 5th Avenue apartment.)

About My Rock

I have recently relocated near my hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. Charlestonians are very proud people. We have two rivers which surround the peninsula of Charleston. The Ashley River and the Cooper River. That's pronounced Coo-pa. Any Charlestonian will tell you our rivers formed the Atlantic Ocean. Google the Cooper River Bridge in Charleston, SC. I am going to walk the bridge path and throw my rock into the Cooper. As it rolls around the river bottom with the tides, it will get smoother, it may break and become two rocks. It may make its way to the Atlantic Ocean. But just like you and I it will change... I challenge each and every one of you to own a vision and roll with it, or should I say ROCK!

Southern Chivalry

As you can see, I've worked through my fears, put this experience into perspective and I'm fired UP! Thank you teachers for your performances. Thank you for the crickets. Thank you Sponsors and Attendees, what a bond we have, I miss you already.

212 Degrees

My final PPT presentation was not a good performance. If we can get some extra credit for our homework assignment, I hope I've earned it. As Deb would say, it's time to put on my "big girl panties."

Regards, Helen
